Repeaters and “Tones”
-
In the Lee/Collier County area, most Repeaters require a 136.5 Hz PL Tone.
-
Typically, “PL Tone” refers to a Tone transmitted by your radio to activate a Repeater.
-
PL stands for Private Line, which is actually a Motorola brand name for CTCSS.
-
CTCSS stands for Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System.
When “Tone Squelch” on your radio is enabled, you will not hear anything on your radio unless the correct Tone is transmitted. Not all repeaters transmit a Tone.
Some radios can be set to “TONE” or “TSQL”.
When TONE is set, it transmits a Tone.
When TSQL is set, it transmits a tone AND requires a Tone to be received by your radio to break the Squelch.
Signal Reports
One of the most basic features of an amateur radio contact (ham-speak=QSO) is an exchange of signal reports so each participant knows how well they are coming through. If either end has a poor signal, then usually the exchange is minimized to avoid the frustration of trying to copy the other ham. Conversely, a good signal report means you are likely to have a good QSO and can exchange a lot of information if you want to.
