How to use the D-STAR Reflector System

Reflectors are somewhat similar to the Conference Rooms used on analog systems, and at any time any number of D-Star Repeaters from around the world can be linked to a Reflector. This means that when you transmit through any D-Star repeater when it is linked to a Reflector, your transmission can be heard on all the other Linked Repeaters. Whatever information is transmitted across one of the repeaters is repeated across all of the connected repeaters. If you connect to a reflector, you will be able to talk to everyone on every repeater that is connected to that reflector. Some common US Reflectors:

• REF001C (D-Star’s MegaRepeater)
• REF010C (New England Repeaters)
• REF030C (Georgia/Southeast Repeaters)
• REF034C (Florida Hurricane net)
• REF014B (US West Coast Repeaters)

Step 1!

You must be registered with the D-Star system before you can communicate using D-Star. Make sure you register at one site, and only one site. Follow all the steps shown at http://www.dstargateway.org/D-Star_Registration.html. This is a two-step process, after approval, further steps are required. If you follow these instructions, ignore the references to W4DOC, which registers only stations located in Georgia, and instead substitute W4AES, where registration for Florida stations is fast and easy.  In fact, registration for new users can be completed through W4AES directly at w4aes.dstargateway.org/Dstar.do. When completed, your registration can be checked at query.ki4swy.org.

How to Link to a Reflector

Using a VHF/UHF Transceiver To Link to a Reflector, first decide which Reflector & Module you want to connect to. For example, if you want to connect to Reflector 001 Module C then you need to the following command, YOUR: REF001CL (The L in the 8th position commands the repeater to link to Reflector zero zero one C) The local repeaters callsign must be in the RPT1 and RPT2 Location on the transceiver. Example: RPT1: AA4PP__C (Port letter C (2m), or B (UHF), must be in the 8th position) RPT2: AA4PP__G (the G for Gateway must be in the 8th position) MYCALL: (The underscore characters indicate space characters in setting the UR callsign) If you are successful the repeater will reply with an announcement “Remote System Linked “. Now that you have linked the repeater to Reflector 001C you need to return your transceivers YOUR: to CQCQCQ, otherwise the repeater will attempt to Link every time you transmit and will constantly announce “Remote System is Currently Linked”. To Unlink from a Reflector, transmit the following information, YOUR: _______U (seven spaces and then U to Unlink which must be in the 8th position). In order to link and unlink from reflectors, it is a good idea to create separate memory channels in your transceiver to handle the various functions. The following are examples of how you might program your radio to link and unlink from a given Reflector. This is only an example as you may wish to choose other Names for your memories and save them under different memory numbers etc. Memory 1 (normal channel use for AA4PP__C repeater) YOUR: CQCQCQ__ RPT1: AA4PP__C (Port letter C must be in the 8th position) RPT2: AA4PP__G (the G for Gateway must be in the 8th position) MYCALL: Memory 2 (used to link Repeater AA4PP__C to Reflector 001C) YOUR: REF001CL (The L in the 8th position commands reflector to link to REFlector zero zero one Module C) RPT1: AA4PP__C (Port letter C must be in the 8th position) RPT2: AA4PP__G (the G for Gateway must be in the 8th position) MYCALL: Memory 3 (Used to unlink a repeater from a reflector) YOUR: _______U (seven spaces then the U in the 8th position) RPT1: AA4PP__C (Port letter C must be in the 8th position) RPT2: AA4PP__G (the G for Gateway must be in the 8th position) MYCALL: As an example and using the memory channel examples above, use the following procedure to link the AA4PP__C Repeater to Reflector 001C: First switch to memory channel 1 and listen to assure that the repeater is not in use then announce your callsign and your intention to link to Reflector 001C. If the repeater is currently linked to a different reflector you must first disconnect from the currently connected reflector by going to memory channel 3 and pushing the PTT button. The repeater will tell you that it has unlinked. Next switch to Memory 2 and press your PTT button. After the link is established switch to Memory 1 and wait for a few seconds to check that the Reflector is not already in use then make your call. When you have finished on the Reflector announce that you are unlinking, switch to Memory channel 3, and push the PTT button. The local repeater will announce that it has unlinked. Then switch back to Memory 1 for normal use on the local repeater. If the repeater was initially connected to another Reflector prior to you connecting to Reflector 001C, you should reconnect to the same Reflector that it was previously connected to.

NOTE: All of the South East Florida System D-Star repeaters stay connected to REF030C and should be reconnected to REF030C as soon as you disconnect from any other Reflector.

Reflector Modules Most, if not all Reflectors have at least 3 Modules labeled, A, B and C. Please note that Reflector module designations do not refer to and have no relationship to the Port letters used on D-Star Repeaters.

Using DTMF Codes The table below shows a list of the available DTMF codes you can transmit to link and unlink from Reflectors

*1C	Link to Reflector 001C (leading zeros are disregarded)
*30C	Link to Reflector 030C (leading zero is disregarded
*nnnA (B, C)	Link to Reflector with 3 numbers and module A, B, or C
#	Unlink from the Reflector
00	Trigger voice announcement

You can send DTMF code 00 at any time to find out which reflector, if any, is currently linked. The Gateway will transmit a voice announcement stating which reflector is linked. PLEASE NEVER LEAVE THE REPEATER UNLINKED WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED
